Consider Spice as Medicine
Consider Spice as a Medicine
When we talk about spicy food we are usually referring to chilli and other seasonings and condiments such as turmeric, cumin seed, mustards, hot tomato sauce, salsa, chilli pickle, etc. Spicy food is not only good for loosening nasal congestion and turning up body heat but it also has numerous health benefits. Let’s take a look at the different types of health benefits of spice and spicy foods.
Number one, spicy food helps in fighting a cold. Among spicy foods, chilli pepper is the best to pick to fight common cold problems. Chilli peppers are full of vitamins like A and C and contain Capsaicin. Capsaicin is an active component of chilli peppers and activates the mucous membrane of the nose and it opens nasal passages and reduces sinusitis.
Number two; spicy food fights against cancer. Studies have shown that “capsaicin and chillies
s and other plants of that group slow down the growth of cancer cells” by inducing apoptosis or programmed cell death. Capsaicin slows the growth of deadly tumours and kills off leukemic cells. People suffering from leukaemia produce uncontrolled amounts of white blood cells in the blood and this overproduction of white blood cells disrupts the normal function of the blood. Chilli peppers along with turmeric and mustards work as a powerful anti-cancer drug in the body. An epidemiological study has shown that humans of Indian and Mexican descent have lower rates of some cancers. The phenomenon has been associated with their taking in foods rich in capsaicin.
Number three; spicy foods are good for cardiovascular diseases. As previously stated, chilli peppers contain the chemical compound capsaicin. Capsaicin fights against inflammation. It also reduces the bad cholesterol LDL in the blood. Capsaicin improves the body’s ability to dissolve blood clots by working against the inflammation. Capsaicin also reduces the risk of stroke and heart attacks. Dr Ziming Zhu states that spicy flavours reduce the urge to take salt which in turn contributes to the lowering of blood pressure. A study has claimed that the intake of chilli peppers along with ginger and turmeric widens the arteries.
Number four; spicy foods improve the digestive process. Spice increases the hydrochloric secretion of the stomach. It also improves the mucous lining as well as killing off H-pylori and other bad bacteria in the gut.
Number five; spicy food can lift your mood. By increasing the secretion of feel-good hormones like endorphins and serotonin and staving off stress and depression spicy food benefits our mental health. So, the next time you are in a low mood try having something spicy and check in with how your body responds.
Number six; studies have shown that capsaicin has a thermogenic effect on the body which results in the body being able to more easily burn extra calories resulting in weight loss. Capsaicin also induces the feeling of satiety which in turn contributes to consuming fewer calories.
Number seven; spicy food can assist in relieving the pain of the body. Capsaicin can inhibit the signals that are sent from the nerve cells to the brain. It targets the brain chemical called Substance P. This chemical plays a significant role in injuries and deadens the sensation of pain felt in the body. Capsaicin is also used in certain pain-relieving creams to reduce the burning sensation of painful sores.
Number eight; some spices can provide relief from arthritis pain. Turmeric, garlic and cinnamon are all effective in reducing the joint inflammation in those suffering from arthritic conditions. The chemical compound found in turmeric is called curcumin. Curcumin is responsible for the alleviation of pain associated with arthritis. Cinnamon and garlic have also anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
Number nine; a 2010 study published in Future Oncology Journal stated that capsaicin can work against the growth of prostate cancer. The prostate gland helps in the production and transportation of the male’s seminal fluid and sperm. Patients with prostate cancer can have erectile dysfunction and may have difficulty in urinating. The good news is that like other anti-inflammatory foods and drugs, capsaicin can help in suppressing prostate cancer.
There are so many health benefits to eating spice and spicy food. So, the next time you are suffering from a cold or are in pain or just want a little mood boost to consider eating some spice instead of reaching for a tablet. You may be surprised at how your body responds!

Myth over Cholesterol
CHOLESTEROL
compiled by Nelson Brunton
What
is Cholesterol? Cholesterol, from the Ancient Greek chole- and
stereos followed by the chemical suffix -ol for an alcohol, is an
organic molecule.A waxy fat like substance.
Where
does it come from? Your body makes all the cholesterol it needs.
Between 75-80% cholesterol is produced by the Liver and the remaining
comes from the food you eat.
What
are the different types? HDL, LDL, TG. These are the types that are
generally addressed by the Medics. But you must realise that there is
another type of cholesterol that the average person does not know,
neither is it addressed. It is known as VLDL of Very Low Density
Lipids.
Why
does the body produce Cholesterol?
What
does Cholesterol do? Cholesterol has major functions in the body. Its
a component of cell membranes which is composed of Proteins,
Cholesterol and Phospholipids. First major function of cholesterol is
It Enables cells not to meet a cell and help maintain integrity and
fluidity and cause free movement. The second major function is to
help produce vitamin D. Vitamin D is produced when we consume fats
and attacks upon the ultraviolet light of the sun to produce the
hormone D3 Cholecalciferol The next function of cholesterol is that
it helps the liver to make bile Since bile increases the
absorption of fats, it is an important part of the absorption of the
fat-soluble substances, such as the vitamins A, D, E, and K. Besides
its digestive function, bile serves also as the route of excretion
for bilirubin, a byproduct of red blood cells recycled by the liver.
After
the brain, the organs hungriest for cholesterol are our endocrine
glands: adrenals and sex glands. They produce steroid hormones.
Steroid hormones in the body are made from cholesterol: testosterone,
progesterone, pregnenolone, androsterone, estrone, estradiol,
corticosterone, aldosterone and others.
LDL
particles are sometimes referred to as "bad" lipoprotein
because concentrations, dose related, correlate with atherosclerosis
progression. High-density lipoproteins(HDL) collect fat molecules
(phospholipids, cholesterol, triglycerides, etc.) from the body's
cells/tissues, and take it back to the liver to be reused..
Triglycerides Tg is an ester derived from glycerol and three
fatty acids. Triglycerides are the main constituents of body fat in
humans and other animals, as well as vegetable fat. Triglycerides
provide your body with energy, but their main function is to store
energy for later use. The food you eat contains calories in the form
of carbohydrates, protein and fat. When you consume more calories
than your body can use, it stores those calories in the form of
triglycerides.
Conventional
Cholesterol test. Test your cholesterol
Your
risk of heart disease can be assessed with a blood- cholesterol test.
According to expert guidelines:
Total
cholesterol should be 5.0 mmol/L or less.
LDL
should be 3.0mmol/L or less after an overnight fast.
HDL
should be 1.0mmol/L or more.
Total
cholesterol/HDL ratio should be less than 4.0.
VLDL:
(very low-density lipoprotein) contains very little protein. The main
purpose of VLDL is to distribute the triglyceride produced by your
liver. A high VLDL cholesterol level can cause the buildup of
cholesterol in your arteries and increases your risk of heart disease
and stroke.
Your
Total Cholesterol reading will be calculated according to you
HDL+LDL+20% of your Tg.

Particle Number and Particle Size Made Easy
By
Axel F. Sigurdsson MD
Recently
measurements of atherogenic lipoprotein particles, such as LDL-P (LDL
particle number), apolipoprotein B (apoB) and lipoprotein(a) have
been found to be very useful to assess risk.
LDL-P
measures the actual number of LDL particles (particle concentration).
LDL-P may be a stronger predictor of cardiovascular events than
LDL-C. Low LDL-P is a much stronger predictor of low risk than low
LDL-C. In fact, about 30 – 40% of those with low LDL-C may have
elevated LDL-P. Therefore you can have low LDL-C but still be at risk
for heart disease, particularly if your LDL-P is elevated.
Discordance is considered present if LDL-C differs from LDL-P.
LDL-C
is a measure of the cholesterol mass within LDL-particles. LDL-C only
indirectly reflects the atherogenic potential of LDL particles. ApoB
and LDL-P on the other hand reflect the number of atherogenic
particles, with no mention of cholesterol mass. ApoB and LDL-P are
believed to be better risk predictors than LDL-C.
Many
recent studies have looked into the importance of LDL-particle size.
Studies show that people whose LDL particles are predominantly small
and dense, have a threefold greater risk of coronary heart disease.
Furthermore, the large and fluffy type of LDL may be protective.
Sometimes
it is difficult to understand the difference between LDL-C and LDL-P
and how particle size comes into the picture. It is quite likely that
LDL particle number and size will be used more often in the future to
assess risk.
How
did the Myth on Cholesterol come about? Taken from, THE TRUTH ABOUT
ANCEL KEYS: WE’VE ALL GOT IT WRONG by Denise Minger. Once upon a
time, a scientist named Ancel Keys did an awful thing. He published a
study about different countries that made it look like heart disease
was associated with fat intake. But the truth was that he started out
with 22 countries and just tossed out the ones that didn’t fit his
hypothesis! When other researchers analyzed his data using all the
original countries, the link between fat and heart disease totally
vanished. Keys was a fraud, and he’s the reason my mom made me eat
skim milk and Corn Chex for breakfast instead of delicious bacon and
eggs.
The
study began with a great many more countries … but Keys deleted the
countries whose results did not match his pre-conceived conclusions,
leaving him with only Japan, Italy, Great Britain, Australia, Canada
and the US. Full disclosure would have made a great deal of
difference.
Keys
published this graph in 1953 in a paper called called
“Atherosclerosis: A problem in newer public health” (which is
apparently so brilliant that neither the abstract nor full text is
allowed to exist online). It was simple, really: he graphed fat
consumption alongside heart disease mortality in men from six
different countries—and voila! The data points landed in a tidy
little line. Keys first unveiled his Wonder Curve to a handful of
people at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, but his most famous
presentation was at that WHO conference a few years later.
It
is well known that the indirect method merely suggests that there is
an association between the characteristics studied and mortality
rates and, further, that no matter how plausible such an association
may appear, it is not in itself proof of a cause-effect relationship.
But quotation and repetition of the suggestive association soon
creates the impression that the relationship is truly valid, and
ultimately it acquires status as a supporting link in a chain of
presumed proof.
What
is the truth? The evidence—both from experiments and from field
surveys—indicates that the cholesterol content, per se, of all
natural diets has no significant effect on either the serum
cholesterol level or the development of atherosclerosis in man.
You
decide.

Ancient Herbal Traditional Chinese Medicine Can Fight Malaria and TB, Says New Study
Ancient Herbal Traditional Chinese Medicine Can Fight Malaria and TB, Says New Study
A
centuries-old herbal Chinese medicine, used to effectively treat
malaria, may help fight tuberculosis and slow the evolution of drug
resistance, scientists have found. In a study led by Robert
Abramovitch, from the Michigan State University in the US, the
ancient remedy artemisinin stopped the ability of TB-causing
bacteria, known as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, to become dormant.
This stage of
the disease often makes the use of antibiotics ineffective. “When
TB bacteria are dormant, they become highly tolerant to antibiotics,”
Abramovitch said. “Blocking dormancy makes the TB bacteria more
sensitive to these drugs and could shorten treatment times,” he
said.
Mycobacterium
tuberculosis, or Mtb, needs oxygen to thrive in the body. The immune
system starves this bacterium of oxygen to control the infection.
Abramovitch and his team found that artemisinin attacks a molecule
called heme, which is found in the Mtb oxygen sensor.
By disrupting
this sensor and essentially turning it off, the artemisinin stopped
the disease’s ability to sense how much oxygen it was getting.
“When the Mtb is starved of oxygen, it goes into a dormant state,
which protects it from the stress of low-oxygen environments,”
Abramovitch said. “If Mtb can’t sense low oxygen, then it can’t
become dormant and will die,” he said.
Abramovitch
indicated that dormant TB can remain inactive for decades in the
body. However, if the immune system weakens at some point, it can
wake back up and spread. Whether it wakes up or stays ‘asleep’
though, he said TB can take up to six months to treat and is one of
the main reasons the disease is so difficult to control. “Patients
often don’t stick to the treatment regimen because of the length of
time it takes to cure the disease,” he said.
“Incomplete
therapy plays an important role in the evolution and spread of
multi-drug resistant TB strains,” he said. The research could be
key to shortening the course of therapy because it can clear out the
dormant, hard-to-kill bacteria. This may lead to improving patient
outcomes and slowing the evolution of drug-resistant TB.
After
screening 540,000 different compounds, Abramovitch also found five
other possible chemical inhibitors that target the Mtb oxygen sensor
in various ways and could be effective in treatment as well. “TB is
a global problem that requires new tools to slow its spread and
overcome drug resistance. This new method of targeting dormant
bacteria is exciting because it shows us a new way to kill it,”
said Abramovitch.
The study was
published in the journal Nature Chemical Biology.

The 3 Gifts
The 3 Gift. By Nelson Brunton
Reading through the Holy Scriptures, we are told that when Jesus was born the 3 Wiseman from the east followed the Star which leads them to the Stable. They brought with them Gifts which were Gold, frankincense & Myrrh. Analyzing these three Gifts 2 stand out as essential oils, very healing in their use, but the third, Gold seems out of context. What would Jesus want with gold? According to me, I feel the third being Gold is the all healing herb Turmeric. This makes more sense as with the the other two are also for healing.
Myrrh: Common myrrh oil uses historically, include:
Fragrance, Embalming, Flavoring for food, Treating hay fever, As an antiseptic to clean and heal wounds,As a paste to help stop bleeding.
Frankincense: Helps Decrease Inflammation and Pain ,Acts as a Sleep Aid ,Eases Digestion, Heals Skin and Prevents Signs of Aging , Astringent, Kills Harmful Germs and Bacteria , May Help Fight Cancer, or Deal with Chemotherapy Side Effects , Helps Boost Immune System Function and Prevents Illness , Helps Reduce Stress Reactions & Negative Emotions.
Turmeric: Turmeric Contains Bioactive Compounds With Powerful Medicinal Properties, Curcumin is a Natural Anti-Inflammatory Compound, Turmeric Dramatically Increases The Antioxidant Capacity of The Body, Curcumin Boosts Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, Linked to Improved Brain Function and a Lower Risk of Brain Diseases, Curcumin Leads to Various Improvements That Should Lower Your Risk of Heart Disease, Turmeric Can Help Prevent (And Perhaps Even Treat) Cancer, Curcumin May be Useful in Preventing and Treating Alzheimer’s Disease, Arthritis Patients Respond Very Well to Curcumin Supplementation, Studies Show That Curcumin Has Incredible Benefits Against Depression, Curcumin May Help Delay Aging, and Fight Age-Related Chronic Diseases.

Vitamin D
by Nelson Brunton
Today we are advised to take a supplement of Vitamin D, during the Autumn and winter. It is claimed we are suffering from a lack of this vitamin which is the cause of many conditions suffered by the average person. Especially the Old and in-firmed. Symptoms like a lack of Calcium, osteoporosis, Arthritis, Depression etc. But is this true? It is the cause or is there a misunderstand of the true cause of the sufferings.
Healing Properties of Vitamin D3
Vitamin D3
In this modern World, there is no excuse for anyone to suffer Rickets, Osteoporosis or other bone disorders. The reason for any suffering of these is because people are not getting enough Sun Light. To protect ourselves and children from the sun and prevent skin cancer, most people smother their body with high Factor sun cream. We are scare mongered into the belief that the sun is harmful and we need to protect our skin from its direct light. Since when has Mother Nature produced anything to work against her creation? The problem is that a lack of exposure to the Sun is the real cause of their condition. A severe lack of D3

The problem is that a lack of exposure to the Sun is the real cause of their condition. A severe lack of D3
However, you may ask, what is the difference between Vitamin D and D3?
Vitamin D2 is the form of D that is found in fortified foods like milk, juices or cereals etc. D regulates calcium and phosphorus in the body. This vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) can be found in some plants/fungus.
What is Vitamin D3? D3 is the form that is synthesized by the skin when it's exposed to the sun or (ultraviolet light/UVB). D3 (cholecalciferol) is the sunlight form, and can also be obtained from animals that manufactured it through their skin, like that in fish liver. Since the body can produce this, it's actually considered a hormone and not a vitamin

Where do we get it from? Vitamin D3 a compound occurring naturally in fish-liver oils used to treat rickets. Formula: C 27 H 44 O. Fifteen to twenty minutes of the sunshine each day, in the nude, helps your body manufacture about 10,000 to 15,000 iu of vitamin D3 per day.
Why do we need D3?
Vitamin D3 is both a vitamin and a hormone. It acts as a vitamin when it binds with calcium for proper absorption. Humans cannot digest calcium without adequate amounts of Vitamin D3.
The most common reasons for Vitamin D3 deficiency in today's society relates to the lack of exposure to sunlight and infrequent consumption of cold-water fish such as wild salmon, mackerel & sardines.
D3 Deficiency: We need D3 to maintain the normal bone and teeth.
- Normal absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus and the maintenance of normal blood calcium concentrations
- Normal cell division
- Normal function of the immune system and healthy inflammatory response
- The maintenance of normal muscle function

Pregnant women and Vitamin D: Your body needs vitamin D for:
• Optimum Bone Health
• Cellular Health – Helps Stop Free Radical, Cancer Causing Cells from Developing
• Organ Health – Heart, Liver, Kidneys
• Muscular Health – Strength & Stamina
• Autoimmune Health – Fight Disease and Illness
• Brain Health – Mental Acuity, Memory, and Helps Fight Depression & Mood Swings

A study in Canada reveals that it is not uncommon for pregnant women to be vitamin D deficient. Women from European (white) ethnicity had less of a deficiency than those of other ethnic groups.
Vitamin D3 deficiency can result in Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Depression, Psoriasis, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Kidney Stones, Osteoporosis, & Neuro-degenerative disease including Alzheimer’s Disease. Eventually, Vitamin D deficiency may even lead to Cancer (especially breast, prostate, and colon cancers). This vitamin is also believed to play a role in controlling the immune system (possibly reducing one’s risk of cancer and autoimmune diseases), increasing neuro-muscular function and decreasing falls, improving mood, protecting the brain against toxic chemicals, and potentially reducing pain.
Rickets cases may be caused by a lack of vitamin D.
Certain communities in Cardiff England are finding cases of Rickets in children. The once thought of Victorian Age disease is now affecting children in the 21st century. Rickets can lead to bone deformities and stunted growth.
Increasing numbers of adults and even children are suffering from various types of bone abnormalities, autoimmune disorders, and mood swings - all suspected to be caused by the same culprit - vitamin D deficiency. Seems our modern-day aversion to the sun, and a heated debate among the medical community, is having a devastating impact on our bones and our overall health.

The study shows a connection between obese adolescents and vitamin D deficiency. There may be a connection between lack of sun exposure due to low-level outdoor activity and not eating enough foods that contain vitamin d, such as oily fish, eggs and fortified foods like dairy products and breakfast cereals.
With all the medical advances in the 20 the century, Vitamin D3 deficiency is still an epidemic. The problem is that most people avoid the sun these days due to fears of skin cancer. Just think about plants and what happens to them when they avoid the sun. They wither & die.
A standard blood chemistry panel will provide your doctor with your levels of vitamin D3. The test is called 25(OH)D. The existing guidelines state that a deficiency is anything below 50nmol/l, but recent studies show that 80 nmol/l is needed to keep healthy bones and enable vitamin D to perform its other roles in the body.
Foods have been supplemented with Vitamin D, but this has not resulted in an overall increase in Vitamin D levels. This is likely because food and supplement manufacturers rely on an inexpensive form of synthetic Vitamin D called “ergocalciferol”- a form of Vitamin D2.
If you have bone loss or osteoporosis, spend 20 minutes daily in the sunshine with 40% of your skin surface exposed. Morning sun is best; Don’t allow your skin to burn. Tanning Beds do not provide Vitamin D3.
Eat foods high in Vitamin D3 including Cod liver oil, fortified milk, salmon, mackerel, & sardines, egg yolks, beef liver. If you take Vitamin D supplements make sure it is Vitamin D3 and not D2. Take Vitamin D3 supplements with food. I usually recommend Vitamin D3 2000iu-5000iu/ day depending on lab levels.
Pamela Egan, MN, FNP-C, CDE is a board certified Adult & Family Nurse Practitioner, Certified Diabetes Educator, & Clinical Specialist in Mental Health.
A complaint is being filed against the FDA by the vitamin D council regarding policies that affect African Americans.
According to the complaint, the Vitamin D Counsel states that the FDA needs to change their food fortification policies so that milk is not the main source of vitamin D supplements to Americans. The counsel states that the FDA is aware that African Americans drink little to no milk and they require more vitamin D than Caucasian Americans. As a result of the FDA's policies, there is Vitamin D and D3 deficiency and the diseases associated with this deficiency desperately afflicts African Americans.
Healing Properties: Vaccines & anti-virals may not be as effective as vitamin D against the flu. The study shows that vitamin D and vitamin D3 can prevent flu better and more efficiently than anti viral drugs. Vitamin D and Vitamin D3 is also a healthier and cheaper alternative to antiviral drugs.
The Sun may protect you against skin cancer.
This study by professor Delgleish (who specializes in treating patients with melanoma) talks about how sun screen and avoiding the sun completely can actually increase our risk of melanoma. We need the sun on our skin to make vitamin D3 and without it, we can become vitamin D3 deficient, thus leaving us vulnerable to disease. Good vitamin D3 levels trigger a stronger immunity.
Lupus erythematosus patients and repletion of Vitamin D
Studies have shown that Lupus patients that have low levels of vitamin D can progress to more serious cases of Lupus. Studies also show a connection between vitamin D deficiency and Lupus.
Pre-diabetes and Vitamin D.
Dr. Cannell gives a commentary on a newly-completed, randomized controlled trial on vitamin D. Vitamin D may help prevent diabetes in those that are at high risk of developing the condition.
The fact is, your body must have vitamin D, and without it, your health will suffer – greatly.

The Healing Fingers
|
We all use touch for therapy – when we think,
we put our chin on our fist, and when we’re
uncomfortable, we
rub our hands together as if we’re cold. Even babies suck on
their thumbs
when they go to sleep. We don’t do all of these
things for nothing, as each part of our body is
connected to a
whole system. If we know where to apply pressure in the system,
we can overcome
various physical and mental symptoms.

Finger Touch
Therapy originates from an ancient Chinese technique, in which
every finger
relates to different organs and emotions. In a study
conducted by the Mercy Cancer Centre
in the U.S., all of the
participants experienced beneficial sensations, including reduced
stress
and nausea during chemotherapy. Additionally, many
patients that reported difficulties sleeping
found that by
holding their thumb and taking deep breaths, they were able to
fall asleep much
faster. It is assumed that thumb holding is
related to the way babies suck on their thumbs,
but either way,
both patients and doctors strongly recommend this method.
To use this
technique, all you have to do is make a fist around the finger
that’s connected to
the sensation or body-part you wish to
soothe, and slowly apply pressure to it for 3-5 minutes
while
breathing deeply. If you want to balance your whole body, simply
do it for each finger on
both hands.

Fish oil looks promising for cancer therapy
Complementary medicine means combining conventional medical treatments with something considered less mainstream, like supplements or herbal remedies. Some conventional doctors understand the benefits of combining treatments, but many don’t. That’s why it’s especially helpful when research shows it can work.
Take fish oil for example. The good news about the omega-3 fats found in fish oil just keep on coming. Now researchers have found a way in which it can improve quality of life and extend survival for cancer patients.
When scientists at the University Hospitals of Leicester in the United Kingdom gave omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil to people undergoing chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer, they found that the fats bolstered their response to the medical treatment and improved their quality of life.
In the tests, the omega-3 fats stabilized the patients’ cancers and lessened their liver difficulties.
This latest study is more evidence of the benefits of omega-3 fats. One reason these nutrients are so important: They perform important functions in cell membranes and influence the way cells communicate with each other and respond to changes in the body.
The body also uses omega-3s for limiting harmful inflammation and researchers believe that this anti-inflammatory effect may help it lower the risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease and could also contribute to its beneficial role as a factor in treating cancer. Plus, these fatty acids can moderate conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, eczema and lupus.
Unfortunately, most of the foods you’ll find in the supermarket contain very little omega-3 fats. Instead, they are usually processed with highly refined omega-6s (think corn oil, cottonseed oil and safflower oil). And when you consume a diet that incorporates too many omega-6 fats and too few omega-3s that imbalance may contribute to extra inflammation in your body.
The potential end result of that imbalance, say researchers: an increased risk of neurodegenerative illnesses and asthma, as well as cancer and cardiovascular complications.
My feeling is that you shouldn't wait until you’re possibly faced with cancer to start getting plenty of omega-3 fats. That’s why I eat fish several times a week and take fish oil supplements. Fish oil benefits are just too valuable to pass up.
